Travel planning first

Our role is to connect these details into one workable journey.

Weather, seasons & beaches

When is the best time to travel to Sri Lanka?

There is no single best month for the whole island. Sri Lanka has different weather patterns across the country. Sri Lanka Tourism currently describes the northeast monsoon as bringing favorable conditions to the southwest coast from December to February, while the southwest monsoon affects the southwest from May to September and is more favorable for the east and north. October–November can bring heavier showers across the island. For beach plans, we normally choose the coast that fits your travel month rather than treating the country as one weather zone.

When are the south and west coasts good for beaches and surfing?

For many south and west coast beach trips, the generally favorable period is during the drier southwest-coast season, especially from late-year into the early months of the year. Your exact beach choice still depends on sea conditions, wind, hotel location and the experience you want.

When is the east coast better for beach and surf travel?

The east coast can become the more suitable side during the southwest monsoon period, with areas such as Trincomalee and the east-coast surf region fitting different travel styles. We match the coast to the month rather than promising identical beach weather everywhere.

Can I travel around Sri Lanka in the rainy season?

Yes. Rain does not automatically cancel a Sri Lanka round trip. A strong route can move between climatic zones, use flexible sightseeing windows and place beach days on the more suitable coast. We also recommend checking official weather and disaster-management alerts close to departure.

What should I expect in the hill country?

The central highlands can be cooler and wetter than the lowlands. Pack a light layer for evenings, comfortable walking shoes and a compact rain layer or umbrella. Sri Lanka Tourism specifically recommends light woollens for the hills and waterproof clothing or an umbrella when appropriate.

How long should I stay?

How many days do I need for a first Sri Lanka trip?

For a broad first journey, we generally recommend at least seven nights. More days allow a better balance between cultural sites, wildlife, hill country and coast without turning every day into a long transfer.

Why can Sri Lanka travel times feel longer than online maps suggest?

Road speeds, traffic, local road conditions, town congestion and sightseeing stops all affect real travel time. Our planning approach is deliberately conservative: we use realistic door-to-door timing rather than relying only on the fastest map estimate.

Can I add beach days to a cultural or wildlife round trip?

Yes. A beach finish is often practical on south or west coast routes when your flight timing supports it. For east-coast beach stays, we may place the beach section earlier in the itinerary to avoid an unnecessary cross-island transfer immediately before departure.

Airport arrival, pickup & drop-off

Can Green Lanka Vacations arrange airport pickup?

Yes. We can arrange a private arrival transfer from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to Negombo, Colombo or the first destination on your route. We use the flight details you provide to coordinate the pickup plan.

Can I book an airport drop for an early morning flight?

Yes. Departure timing is planned backward from your flight and the expected road time. We confirm the pickup time with you rather than treating every airport journey as the same.

What transport options are available at Bandaranaike International Airport?

BIA's official passenger information currently lists taxi, public transport, bus and train options, with airport taxi services operating counters in the arrivals area. For a private holiday, we can arrange a pre-planned vehicle so you do not have to organize the first transfer after a long flight.

Is Negombo a practical first or last stop?

Yes. Negombo is useful for travelers who want a short arrival or departure stay near BIA. It can also be integrated with lagoon, beach and local-experience activities before the main round trip begins.

Trains, tickets & scenic journeys

Can you include a train journey in my itinerary?

Yes. Scenic rail can be incorporated where it fits the route and timing. Popular highland sectors can be useful as an experience rather than simply a way to move between two points.

How do Sri Lanka Railways advance seat reservations work?

Sri Lanka Railways currently provides an official online advance seat-reservation service. Users create an account, search the route and date, and can reserve up to five passengers at once. The official system states that e-tickets and booking details are sent by email for online reservations, and a reservation becomes guaranteed after full payment.

Can you help with train tickets?

We can help you plan the right rail sector, timing and connection within your itinerary. Where a seat reservation is required, we recommend using the official Sri Lanka Railways reservation system or arranging the booking as part of your travel service, depending on the route and availability.

What happens if reserved train seats are unavailable?

Availability can change quickly. The official railway guidance notes that online inventory may be exhausted, the journey may not be available for reservation on the selected stations, or the travel date may fall outside the booking window. In those cases, we can adjust the route or transport plan rather than leaving the rest of the itinerary dependent on one train.

Dress, meals & everyday comfort

What should I wear in Sri Lanka?

Light, breathable clothing works well for the lowlands. For temples and religious sites, modest clothing is important; shoulders and knees should generally be covered. In hill areas, bring a light warm layer. For hikes, bring closed shoes or proper trekking footwear. Sri Lanka Tourism also recommends comfortable footwear and waterproof protection where needed.

Do I need different clothes for temples and beach areas?

Yes. Beachwear is appropriate at the beach, but religious sites require more modest dress. Keeping a lightweight shawl, shirt or cover-up in your day bag is an easy way to be prepared when moving between sightseeing and relaxed coastal stops.

Can you arrange meals for vegetarian, vegan or other dietary needs?

Yes. Tell us your dietary requirements when you enquire. Sri Lankan cuisine offers many rice, curry, vegetable, fruit and seafood choices, and meal planning can be adjusted to your preferences, allergies and comfort level. Always communicate serious allergies clearly before dining.

Should I eat local food during my trip?

Local food can be an important part of the experience. We can suggest trusted local restaurants, hotels, markets and cooking experiences based on your route and comfort level, while also allowing familiar food choices where preferred.

Costs, hotels & tickets

What makes up the cost of a Sri Lanka holiday?

The major components are accommodation, private transport or other transport, meals, attraction and national-park entry fees, activities, guide services and international flights. Costs also vary with season, hotel level, route length and the amount of private service requested.

Does a higher hotel price always mean a better experience?

Not necessarily. Location, room quality, service, views, meal plan and access to the places you want to visit all matter. We prefer to match the accommodation to your route and priorities instead of choosing by star rating alone.

Are entrance tickets included in every tour?

Not automatically. Inclusion depends on the individual itinerary and quotation. We identify major attraction and safari costs during planning so you can see which items are included and which are optional or paid locally.

Can you help with the overall trip budget?

Yes. We can build the itinerary around your target travel style and explain the main cost drivers before you confirm. Our goal is to make the route and inclusions clear, not simply to present one unexplained package number.

Wildlife, whale watching & experiences

Can wildlife experiences be included in a normal round trip?

Yes. Wildlife can be integrated into cultural and coastal routes through national parks, birding locations, elephant experiences and other suitable stops. Timing matters, so we plan safari days around the route rather than adding them at random.

When should I plan whale watching?

Whale-watching conditions vary by coast, season and sea state. We recommend choosing the coast and departure date based on the current seasonal pattern and operator availability rather than promising sightings. Weather and sea conditions can still change on the day.

Is whale watching guaranteed?

No wildlife sighting is guaranteed. Ethical wildlife travel means understanding that animals remain wild and conditions can change. We can help select an appropriate departure window and operator while keeping expectations realistic.

Private drivers, routes & booking

Why choose a private driver for a Sri Lanka round trip?

A private driver provides flexibility for hotel pickups, sightseeing stops, luggage, route changes and different travel styles within one itinerary. It is particularly useful when a trip combines multiple regions and you want to avoid rebuilding the transport plan every day.

Can I customize an existing Green Lanka Vacations tour?

Yes. Existing tour concepts can usually be adapted around your dates, pace, interests, hotel preferences, activity level and airport schedule. Custom routing is a core part of our travel-planning approach.

Do you plan honeymoon and family trips differently?

Yes. Honeymoon routes may prioritize privacy, slower pacing and selected experiences, while family trips often benefit from shorter transfer blocks, flexible meal stops and practical hotel locations. We build around the people travelling rather than using one standard route.

How far in advance should I contact you?

Earlier is helpful for peak-season travel, popular hotels, private drivers and scenic train sectors. We can also help with shorter-notice trips when transport and accommodation are still available.

Is an enquiry the same as a booking?

No. An enquiry starts the planning conversation. A booking is only confirmed after the itinerary, inclusions, availability, payment and applicable booking conditions have been agreed.

Start or finish in Negombo

Close to BIA and useful for a gentle arrival or departure, Negombo can be combined with lagoon, beach and local experiences.

Build the route around your interests

Heritage, wildlife, highlands, beaches and local experiences can be combined according to your dates and the amount of time you have.
